| Press Releases | | | The President of the Republic met with the Chairman of the Centre Party01.04.2003
President Arnold Rüütel who yesterday had been notified by the Government of the Republic of their resignation, today started talks to form a new government. For this evening, the President invited to Kadriorg the Chairman of the Centre Party, Edgar Savisaar.
At their meeting, the Head of State once again confirmed his wish to observe good political traditions and to nominate as candidate for Prime Minister the leader of the political party having been given the strongest support in the elections. Since in the elections to the Riigikogu on March 2, the Centre Party had won the most votes, the President at today's meeting proposed Edgar Savisaar to form the new government.
Edgar Savisaar thanked the Head of State for his confidence, but added that in today's political situation where three parties had agreed to form a majority coalition he was unable to accept the Presidents proposal.
President Rüütel will continue his consultations for nominating a candidate for Prime Minister tomorrow.
