The National Defence Council summoned by the President of the Republic, Arnold Rüütel, met at Kadriorg this morning to discuss issues connected with the possible beginning of military operations in Iraq.
The President heard overviews of the activities of our ministries and other agencies in safeguarding Estonia's internal and external security.
As the second item on the agenda, the possibilities of the Republic of Estonia to take part in the post-conflict operations in Iraq were under discussion. The Commander of the Defence Forces, Vice Admiral Tarmo Kõuts, briefed those present on the readiness of an infantry platoon, Estonian deminers and an airfield cargo-handling unit to operate in the postwar Iraq.
The National Defence Council was quite content with the analysis presented of our readiness and capabilities to operate in the current situation.
