President Arnold Rüütel at the festive ceremony "Estonia is Grateful", which took place today at noon at the Kadriorg Art Museum, presented outstanding politicians, state officials, educationalists, cultural figures, entrepreneurs and economists with state decorations.
For his support to Estonia, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Finland Esko Tapani Aho on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia was awarded the 1st Class Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana and former Commander of the Finnish Defence Forces Jan Klenberg the 1st Class Order of the Cross of the Eagle. Prime Minister Siim Kallas and Chairman of the Riigikogu received from the President the 2nd Class Orders of the National Coat of Arms.
The President addressing the recipients of the orders highlighted their commitment to Estonia, their valour and diligence. The Head of State paid special tribute to those women who besides their home and children have had enough will to consider the promotion of the Republic of Estonia very important. You have maintained the Estonian language and culture, taught Estonian children, demonstrated that the Estonian thought and spirit have future. It is not really important what has been your job. The way you have done it is important, the Head of State emphasized.
On behalf of the honorees spoke biologist Kaja Lotman whose work as environmentalist was recognized with the 4th Class Order of the White Star.
The Head of State today presented with state decorations altogether nearly one hundred individuals. At Presidents request, the state decorations conferred on the occasion of the Independence Day in counties will be handed over by county governors and in foreign countries by ambassadors.
