The President of the Republic completed his tour of the County of Tartu12.02.2003
President Arnol Rüütel's and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel's two-day tour of the County of Tartu ended tonight at Kambja. This afternoon, they familiarized themselves with the facilities of the Port of Tartu and plans of its owners to expand their activities. Thereafter, they headed for the rural municipality of Kambja where they called at the local school and church.
After five years of construction, the building of the school is still unfinished since, according to the leaders of the municipality, the funds earmarked by the state had been dispersed over too long a period. In President's view, the plans of the municipality and builders to ensure further funding by means of factoring deserved to be supported for the school building was to be completed without further delay.
The municipality leaders also broached the problem of different strict norms with reference to the EU requirements being implemented, which had resulted in the shutdown of many businesses.
Summarizing the tour, President Arnold Rüütel said that in his long-time home county he had seen several new successful businesses owned by Estonians, which enriched local life and, by creating new jobs, played a most vital socio-politcal role in their regions.
