The President of the Republic met with the Prime Minister

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg during a traditional working Wednesday-lunch discussed with Prime Minister Siim Kallas the day-to-day problems of Estonian domestic policy.

At the beginning of their meeting, the President asked the Prime Minister to comment on the accusations brought against Minister of Internal Affairs Ain Seppik in the press and the motion of censure tabled by the opposition in the Riigikogu. The Prime Minister promised to keep the Head of State informed of the relevant developments and assured that he would not make a decision before the problem had been properly reported to him.

The President informed the Prime Minister of his considerations selecting the candidate for auditor general. At the request of the Head of State, the factions of the Riigikogu on Monday, February 3, will present him their positions on this issue, upon which the President will make his proposal for the appoinment to the Parliament.

At the today's meeting, President Rüütel and Prime Minister Kallas talked also about the need to conclude a national agreement and to sign a pertinent memorandum. As emphasized by the Head of State, an agreement like this would serve the purpose of strengthening civil society, and many potential partners to the agreement had already expressed their willingness to conclude it. The Prime Minister voiced his support to the corresponding efforts.
