The President of the Republic met with Juhan Parts
20.01.2003

President Arnold Rüütel this evening at Kadriorg had a talk with the Chairman of Res Publica, Juhan Parts, who briefed the Head of State on the manifesto and aspirations of the named political party in the current election campaign.

Thereafter, they talked about the election campaign and the situation in Estonia's domestic policy in a more general way. They were in accord that the main subject of the forthcoming election were rather Estonia's national interests than just only a tax reform. In President's view, in the course of the election campaign the dialogue with the people should be considerably intensified. Juhan Parts agreed to that adding that the Res Publica, too, disapproved of forced party membership and of using the taxpayer's money in election campaign.

Furthermore, the Head of State raised the issue of concluding a new national agreement. Juhan Parts assured that the Res Publica was convinced of the need for a real consensus. The national agreement should be a long-term programme with a circle of participants as wide as possible, and reaching the agreement by no means should be turned into a part of the election campaign of politicians in power, Juhan Parts noted.

Specific areas to be regulated by the national agreement were under discussion as well. As the most essential of these, the President's Academic Council has put forward our demographic situation, financing and quality of education, stability and sustainability of our business environment, and a balanced relationship between the central authorities and local government. These were issues of strategic importance in the opinion of Juhan Parts too.

President Rüütel in the near future intends to meet the leaders of all political parties in order to discuss with them, among other things, the national agreement.
