The President of the Republic met with Tunne Kelam

President Arnold Rüütel this afternoon at Kadriorg met with Tunne Kelam, Deputy Chairman of the Riigikogu and Chairman of the Riigikogu's European Affairs Committee, to talk with him about the citizenship and language policy of Estonia.

Tunne Kelam briefed the President on a roundtable of political parties where the issues of language and citizenship policy had been discussed. Mr Kelam informed the President about a draft agreement of political parties on the citizenship and language policy which aimes at keeping to the present direction. At the meeting, they stated jointly that the principles of the citizenship and language policy currently effective in Estonia conformed to all international agreements and requirements effective in democratic countries.

Mr Kelam suggested to the President that he should meet with representatives of all our political parties in order to discuss with them the above issue before the general election on 2 March 2002, to which the President gave his consent.
