16.12.2002

President Arnold Rüütel this afternoon at Kadriorg met the leaders of the Confederation of Estonian Trade Unions who informed the Head of State of the situation resulting from the break-up of the social dialogue.

Chairwoman of the Confederation Kadi Pärnits, Secretary General Raivo Paavo and Vice-Chairwoman Laivi Rõõmus assured the President of the trade unions` willingness to resume the dialogue. President Rüütel called on the trade unionists to gather already in the nearest future together with representatives of the Government and employers at the negotiating table to explain them the necessity to continue the dialogue and to agree on its principles. The Head of State voiced hope that presently, on top of that, a Christmas peace be concluded between the employers and employees.

According to the President's conviction, trade unions had to play a very vital role in democratic society and transition economy. He also noted that the understanding of the necessity to keep to agreements should firmly take root in Estonia. The Head of State added that defining and recognizing the principles and framework of society's development as a national agreement should facilitate the future cooperation between employers and employees. The trade union officials confirmed their readiness to be one of the parties to the national agreement to be concluded.
