The President of the Republic met the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament
11.12.2002

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the Chairwoman of the Parliament of Georgia, Nino Burjanadze.

At their meeting, it was noted with satisfaction that the relationship between the peoples of Estonia and Georgia had always been characterized by an understanding for each other's aspirations and mutual support. Ms Burjanadze spoke with appreciation about Estonia's support to Georgia in international organisations and said that she was desirous of deepening the cooperation between the parliaments and governments of the two countries.

Congratulating Estonia on its rapid development and progress in acceding to NATO and the EuropeanUnion, Nino Burjanadze voiced her desire to use Estonia's remarkable experience of the transition period in the interests of Georgia's development. The specific areas, in which Georgia would like to learn from Estonia, were, according to the Speaker, frontier protection, legislation, and integration into the European Union and NATO. In addition, Speaker Burjanadze said that the promotion of economic cooperation between the Baltic and Black Sea regions was vital as well, to which President Rüütel consented.

During the discussion, the relations with the common neighbour of both countries, Russia, were touched upon too. Both the Chairwoman of the Parliament of Georgia and the Head of State of Estonia underscored the importance of the principle of goodwill and mutual respect that forms the basis of good-neighbourly cooperation. Nino Burjanadze voiced hope that the international community, including Russia, understood how crucial was adherence to international agreements and withdrawal of foreign troops from Georgia. In President Rüütel`s view, the presence of alien troops gave offence to society and democracy.

Ms Burjanadze thanked President Rüütel and Estonia for supporting Georgia, and gave President Rüütel cordial regards from President Eduard Shevardnadze.
