23.11.2002

President Arnold Rüütel presented Saulius Sondeckis, Conductor of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, with the IV Class Order of the Cross of Terra MarianaPresident Arnold Rüütel this afternoon in Vilnius presented Saulius Sondeckis, Conductor of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, with the IV Class Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana.

The President highlighted the outstanding contribution of Maestro Sondeckis to making Estonian music known on an international scale. The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra is this very orchestra, which already for over decades, has had in its repertoire works of Estonian composers Arvo Pärt, Veljo Tormis, Jaan Rääts, Raimo Kangro and many others.

Professor Sondeckis receiving the honour said that he perceived this high decoration conferred on him as a credit to the Estonian-Lithuanian cultural ties and the friendship between musicians of the two countries. "Estonia and Tallinn are to me of a special sentimental value, because it was actually there, 40 years ago - in December 1962, that I made my début outside Lithuania," Maestro Sondeckis remembered.

He added that he felt proud of his long-time friendship with many Estonian composers, conductors and music teachers.

The conferral ceremony attended by Lithuanian cultural figures, friends of Estonia and local Estonians took place at the Estonian Embassy.
