The President of the Republic talked to a parliamentary committee
25.11.2002

President Arnold Rüütel this afternoon at Kadriorg met with members of the Riigikogu's European Affairs Committee to discuss the tasks of our national Parliament and politicians arising from the upcoming enlargement of the European Union.

The President stressed that, in order to shape Europe's future in line with the people's expectations, political unity and support of the Parliament were of particular importance. The members of the committee, just like the President, voiced their attitude that Estonia wanted to join an alliance of national states, not a centralized federal state. It was noted that in the work of the future European Parliament the role of national parliaments would be very important.

The today's meeting unanimously took a strong stand on recommending politicians and competent authorities to acquaint Estonia's inhabitants with the European Union in a more thorough, comprehensive and understandable way than so far.

The Head of State informed the members of the committee of his forthcoming working visit to Brussels where he is scheduled to meet with the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, the Enlargement Commissioner, Günter Verheugen, and others.
