The National Defence Council welcomed the invitation of Estonia to talks with NATO

The National Defence Council having assembled, under the chairmanship of President Rüütel, this afternoon at Kadriorg, heared Prime Minister Siim Kallas' overview of how at the Prague Summit an invitation to accession talks with NATO was extended to Estonia. The council also heared the information about the consultations held between the Estonian Prime Minister and the Government of the USA concerning the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1441.

The National Defence Council welcomed the fact that Estonia had received the invitation to the accession talks with NATO and voiced confidence that the Republic of Estonia would fulfil the international obligations deriving from its accession to the Alliance and was continuously ready to participate in safeguarding international security.

The National Defence Council also took note of the President's decision to release Major Leo Kunnas from the post of President's Security Adviser and Secretary of the National Defence Council, due to his appointment as Acting Head of the Operational Department of the Defence Forces' General Staff, and appointment of Major Vahur Väljamäe as Security Adviser the President of the Republic and Secretary of the National Defence Council.
