The President of the Republic met with the President of Italy

President Rüütel this evening in Rome met with the President of Italy, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. The Italian Head of State congratulated Estonia on the invitation to accession talks with NATO presented today in Prague. In addition, President Ciampi voiced a hope that the today's event would strengthen the bilateral cooperation between Estonia and Italy.

Both Heads of State expressed satisfaction with the present state of cultural relations between the two countries but, at the same time, they saw many more opportunities for cooperation. The Presidents were of one accord that Estonia's entry into both NATO and the European Union added a new dimension to the Estonian-Italian relationship.

President Ciampi expressed his admiration for what Estonia and the other Baltic States had accomplished both in the first half and the last decade of the previous century. The Italian President also voiced his delight that Estonia was enriching Europe's common culture.

Speaking about changes in the European Union, the Italian Head of State emphasized that several economic and institutional changes were needed. The Presidents of Estonia and Italy underlined that cooperation and consideration of differences between countries were prerequisites for a strong European Union.

President Arnold Rüütel invited President Ciampi to visit Estonia. The invitation was accepted with gratitude.
