The President of the Republic in Italy was given an honorary doctorate

President Arnold Rüütel is in Italy where the title of Honarary Doctor of the II University of Naples was conferred on him this morning at Caserta.

At the conferral ceremony, the Dean of the University's Law Faculty, Gennaro Franciosi, acquainted the audience with the life of Arnold Rüütel noting that the II University of Naples decided to give the Estonian Head of State for his services to Estonia a diploma of doctor honoris causa of laws.

The Rector of the University, Antonio Grella, handed over the relevant insignia and, thereafter, a congratulatory telegram from the Italian President, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, to the Estonian Head of State was read. In his telegram, the President of Italy emphasized the paramount importance of educating the young generation in Europe uniting. By means of video-conferencing, the ceremony was also attended by the President of Malta, Guido de Marco, who congratulated the Estonian Head of State on honour given to him.

The Estonian Head of State delivered an academic lecture titled "Estonia and Europe", in the course of which he, using Estonia as an example, acquainted the public with both the aspirations of a small nation and the sources of riches of European culture.
