The President of the Republic discussed energy problems

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with Dr Klaus Brendow, Director of the World Energy Council's East/West European Energy Programme, staying in Tallinn because of an international oil shale symposium.

Pondering over the future of Estonian energy policy, they found during their conversation that Estonia's biggest natural resource was the intellectual potential of its population, which should be made full use of while working out development plans of energy sector. President Rüütel underscored the necessity to create an environment-friendly energy system favouring sustainable use of oil shale and advancement of production based on renewable sources of energy.

At the meeting, they also talked about organizing in Estonia the World Energy Council's Executive Assembly Meeting of 2005 which was supported by the Head of State noting that Estonia by that time should have a workable future model of energy.

In the today's discussion, Gunnar Okk, Chairman of the Board of Eesti Energia Ltd, and Ülo Rudi, Chairman of the Estonian Energy Council, took part as well.
