The President of the Republic met with representatives of large families
06.11.2002

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with members of the Board of the Association of Large Families to discuss with them problems having the most serious effect on the living standard and quality of life of large families.

As noted by the President of the Association, Kalmer Kütt, their organisation already over several years had sought assistance from different administrative bodies to solve the problems of large families, however, no positive result could be reported as yet. When the economic situation of one- and two-child-families to a certain degree was comparable with corresponding characteristics of European developed countries, then these Estonian families, which were bringing up ten children, were in a situation dozens of times worse.

The members of the Association of Large Families expressed their deep concern over the fact that, in Estonia, respect for traditional families was constantly decreasing and attitudes, as if large families had problems connected with alcohol, were gaining ground. That was offending those parents who in spite of economic hardships were trying to raise their children to be decent persons and honest citizens.

The Head of State told the representatives of large families that the President's Academic Council had underlined the necessity to balance the development of our society and, with view to this, to conclude a national accord. At the start, this process would centre on improving our demographic situation, and on accessibility and quality of education. The President called upon the Association of Large Families to actively participate in achieving the accord, and asked them to submit their proposals on how to make this process successful.
