On his working visit to Great Britain, President Arnold Rüütel this afternoon at St. James's Palace met with Prince Charles of Wales who took interest in Estonia's preparations for joining the European Union and NATO. The Estonian Head of State indicated that Estonia, its defence spending amounting to 2% of GDP, was able to reach the necessary level of defence capability.
Talking about the future of rural life in the European Union, both the Estonian Head of State and the British Heir to the Throne found that organic farming and family farms had good prospects. Prince Charles emphasized that the European Union's agricultural policy could pay heed, first of all, to social and cultural aspects of rural life, and thus, attach importance to a certain way of life.
At the end of their meeting having lasted longer than scheduled, President Rüütel gave Prince Charles a book about Estonian churches as a present.
Earlier today, President Rüütel had visited an international tourism fair calling at the Estonian stand, and met members of the British-Estonian Association and local Estonians at the Estonian House of London.
