The President of the Republic met with the Ambassador of France
07.11.2002

The Ambassador of France, Mrs Chantal de Ghaisne de Bourmont, presented her credentials to President Arnold RüütelThe new Ambassador of France to Estonia, Mrs Chantal de Ghaisne de Bourmont, today at noon at Kadriorg presented her credentials to President Arnold Rüütel.

President Rüütel receiving the credentials expressed satisfaction with the state of bilateral relations between Estonia and France, and also with the support given by France to Estonia in acceding to the European Union and NATO. The Estonian Head of State recalled that President Jacques Chirac had been the very first president of a European great power expressing openly support to Estonia's accession to NATO, just like his predecessor, President Mitterand, years ago had supported the restoration of the Estonian state.

The Ambassador voiced her conviction that the full membership in the European Union and NATO would enable Estonia to strengthen its institutions, democracy and regained independence. According to her, France wanted the European institutions to be transparent, effective and democratic. In addition, Ambassador de Bourmont acknowledged Estonia's - being a very small country - efforts to preserve its national identity, language and culture.

Speaking about the co-operation between Estonia and France, the Estonian Head of State observed: "I am confident that in the years ahead Estonia and France will identify several areas, in which we drawing on each other's experience and based on common interests can work together in the interests of both our two countries and the whole of Europe."
