President Arnold Rüütel this morning at Kadriorg had a businesslike discussion with Valentina Matviyenko, the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia.
Both the Estonian Head of State and the Russian Deputy Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the contacts between our two neighbouring countries enlivening, the work of the intergovernmental commission intensifying, and the agreements to be signed today going to strengthen the legal basis regulating our bilateral relations.
At the same time, it was noted during the meeting that in various fields of the relations between the two states, there was plenty of scope for improvement. However, as assured by either of the sides, we had every reason to be optimistic about the future, since good-neighbourly relations were in the interests of both countries. For this purpose, the keyword was continuation of our dialogue.
Russia's objective, according to Valentina Matviyenko, was to co-operate with the European Union and NATO. The Deputy Prime Minister added that Estonia's accession to NATO and the European Union would give the bilateral relations between Estonia and Russia new dimensions.
Estonia's Head of State repeatedly stressed that the possibilities to promote our co-operation, as yet, were far from having been used up. President Rüütel added, however, that the today's discussion helped to shape the tomorrow's relationship between Estonia and Russia.
