The President of the Republic handed over the Young Scientist Prize

Computer scientist Ahto Buldas received from President Arnold Rüütel the Young Scientist PrizeComputer scientist Ahto Buldas this afternoon at Kadriorg received from President Arnold Rüütel the Young Scientist Prize which was awarded to him by the Board of President's Cultural Foundation in a competition recently ended.

Physicist Tanel Käämbre, biomedic Vallo Voike and chemist Ivo Leito, also having scored well amid 18 competing scientists, had been invited to attend the ceremony of handing over the prize to the amount of 40,000 Estonian kroons as well.

The President expressed satisfaction with an active participation in the competition, testifying, according to him, to the fact that science had an important place in our society and many young devoted themselves to science. Both the Head of State and entrepreneur Toomas Luman, who is funding the prize, underscored the need to create for promising young scientists a more favourable environment in Estonia.

The work of Ahto Buldas on theoretical fundamentals of timing is targeted at production and long-term preservation of reliable electronic documents. The young scientist already has attracted worldwide attention. He is author of 42 scientific publications and 18 scientific articles, and works at the Tallinn Technical University as professor of data protection and at the Tartu University as associate professor of theoretical informatics.
