President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with Ukrainian Ambassador Mykola Makaryvich to discuss with him developments in the relations between Estonia and Ukraine and to review the results of his state visit to Ukraine having ended ten days ago.

The parties to the discussion shared the view that the state visit of the Estonian President had a strong stimulating effect on developing further our bilateral relations. The Ambassador, in addition, underlined the importance of visiting the Crimea for, to his knowledge, the visit of the Estonian Head of State to the descendants of one-time Estonian emigrants had been the first visit to the Crimea by a president representing an ethnic minority living there.

They also were of one accord that the co-operation and direct relations between regions and cities of Estonia and Ukraine should be promoted.

Talking about the future of the Estonian-Ukrainian relationship the necessity to advance economic contacts was emphasized. The Ambassador indicated that Ukraine intended to join the WTO in 2003 and was simultaneously making efforts to conlude a free trade agreement with the European Union. In the case they succeeded in it, Estonia`s accession to the European Union would not bring about changes in terms of our bilateral trade.

At the meeting, one of the most important topics was the international situation including terrorism spreading in the world. In this connection, also the hostage-crisis in Moscow was touched upon, since, according to the Ambassador, it concerned directly citizens of Ukraine too. President Rüütel condemned terrorism in all of its manifestations noting that peaceful solutions to conflicts were in the interests of all nations of the world. The Estonian Head of State emphasized that taking hostages, like any other kind of attacking peaceful inhabitants, by no means could be justified.
