The President of the Republic completed his tour of Lääne-Virumaa
24.10.2002

The President of the Republic and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel tonight completed their two-day working visit to the County of Lääne-Virumaa, which was focussed on enterprise and education.

In the afternoon, the President visited the production complex of Oleg Gross, a businessman from Rakvere. The company OG Elektra having started with five employees, in the course of a decade, has turned into an enterprise with 524 employees, the shop chain of which covers Lääne-Virumaa and extends well into the neighbouring counties too. The products of Oleg Gross' farm are processed in a factory of culinary and meat products belonging to the same owner and employing 267 people.

The President also acknowledged the development plans of the Tapa Industrial Park. The public limited company Tapa Mill, put into operation as the first enterprise there, has already created 60 jobs but development of infrastructure by the local government will allow them to take within the next decade into use the whole former military terrain and to create hundreds of new jobs.

The Head of State and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel in Lääne-Virumaa visited several schools as well. In the Upper Secondary School of Kadrina and the Basic Scool of Lasila, the visitors were welcomed with a song. The school of Lasila is housed in a manor and takes part in the movement of manor schools. The President appreciated the fact that this historic monument was filled with life and at the same time the centre of local cultural activities. The President also attached great importance to the role played by little country schools – home neighbourhood schools – as the starting point of children's education.

After having arrived at the border of the village Pariisi, County Governor Marko Pomerants gave the Presidential Couple as present a copy of Raimond Kaugver's book "Pariisi lõbusad naised". Like Kaugver, also Mrs Ingrid Rüütel has been awarded the honorary title "Viru Vägev".

Summarizing the tour just finished, President Rüütel said that he had seen promising progress and positive results of both local and foreign investments in Lääne-Virumaa. Moreover, what he had seen at Palasi and Vajangu, confirmed that the villages of Lääne-Virumaa are very much alive and advancing.
