The President of the Republic received Andres Bello Medal

According to the Honorary Consul, the Estonian Head of State was honoured for his contribution to the promotion of culture joining together countries and peoples.

Andres Bello (1781-1865) was a Latin American author and politician. He was born in Venezuela and was Foreign Minister of Chile from 1829 onwards. He became the first Rector of the University of Chile founded in 1842. He wrote books about international law, philosophy, geography, literature, et cetera. Bello's poetry is well-known in the Spanish-language countries.

Initiated by Honorary Consul Arne Roostna, three scientific conferences in remembrance of outstanding Latin American scientists and public figures Alexander von Humboldt, Francisco de Miranda, and Andres Bello have taken place in Tallinn, at our National Library. The last time, also six Ambassadors from South American countries attended the event. Vaino Väljas having worked as diplomat in Venezuela for years said in the today's meeting at Kadriorg that activities like these focused public attention of this region on Estonia.
