The President of the Republic attended NATO exercise
11.10.2002

President Arnold Rüütel visiting the NATO exercise "Cooperative Support" today noted that the success of this exercise in Tallinn was going to have a positive impact on Estonia's accession to NATO. "The NATO exercise taking place in Tallinn and the contribution of Estonian officers to organizing it have brought us closer to this decision by one further step," the President observed.

The Estonian Head of State met the leaders of the exercise who gave him an overview of the tasks and progress of the exercise. "Cooperative Support" is the first exercise in Estonia commanded by a NATO strategic staff and the last one of international exercises held here prior to the NATO Summit in Prague where also inviting Estonia to join the alliance is going to be under discussion.

From the military exercises carried out here after the restoration of Estonia's independence, the "Cooperative Support" with nearly 150 officers from ten NATO countries and 15 partnership-for-peace countries attending has the largest number of participating countries. The Estonian Defence Forces are represented by 12 officers and 8 members of the staff conducting the exercise, and also by technical personnel.
