The President of the Republic started consultations to find a candidate for the new Auditor General
10.10.2002

This afternoon President Arnold Rüütel at Kadriorg met the representatives of all factions of the Riigikogu in order to discuss the standards to be met by candidates for Auditor General and the schedule of preliminary talks. The President emphasized that the candidate to be selected should be honest, competent and capable. The Head of State is convinced that it is possible to find in the Republic of Estonia a suitable candidate who would have the backing of the majority of political forces represented in the Riigikogu.

The Head of State listened to the general positions of the representatives of political parties on candidates for Auditor General, which, in principle, could be divided into two. One part of the representatives of factions found that the new Auditor General meeting the standards set by law could come from political circles. The others saw the main criteria in candidate's political independence and professional competence.

The President will continue his consultations about the topic in question after his state visit to Ukraine.
