The President of the Republic met with the leader of the World Scout Movement
08.10.2002

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the Chairwoman of the World Committee of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement, Dr Marie-Luise Correa, visiting Tallinn on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Scouting in Estonia.

Mrs Correa thanked the Estonian Head of State for his attention paid to the Scout Movement. The Scout leader voiced her confidence that the co-operation of the Estonian Scout organisations with their counterparts in other countries would get still closer and more enriching for both sides.

President Rüütel voiced the hope – like already the day before addressing scouts and leaders of the Scout Movement at the anniversary conference – that the Scouting would become a natural constituent of civic education in the not too distant future. The Head of State said: "The Estonian Scouts in all their activities have followed two principles established by the World Organisation of Scouts. First, that the Scouting is an educational movement in the broadest sense. And second, it is continuous personality development, the task of which is to produce capable individuals characterized by spirit of initiative and taking account of others."

The Chairwoman of the World Committee of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement, Dr Marie-Luise Correa, while in Estonia, is on her first external visit in this office. In the meeting with the President of the Republic, the Estonian Chief Scout, Kristjan Pomm, and the International Commissioner of the Estonian Scout Association, Tanel Peets, took part as well.
