The President of the Republic met with the Prime Minister

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg, at a traditional working Wednesday-lunch, met with Prime Minister Siim Kallas. First, the Head of State was interested in the Government's plans to solve regional and demographic problems.

Taking interest in the priorities of the nexts year's state budget, the President underscored the need to support, more than so far, large families by creating infrastructure providing them with assistance and services. In order to ensure that children were looked after and could develop their talents, the President suggested that more money should be earmarked for salaries of kindergarten and school teachers, for school meals, non-formal education and leisure amenities. The Head of State also wanted to know what steps the Government had designed to boost the birthrate.

Referring to the experience gained during his recent visit to the County of Valga, President Rüütel noted that the state budget should reflect the importance of regional-policy choices. The Head of State gave as an example the concern of Southeast Estonia's local government leaders over underdeveloped road network fettering local enterprise.

At the meeting, the Prime Minister at President's request informed him of the Government's decisions and further possibilities to solve the housing problem of entitled subjects of privatisation living in residential homes.
