24.09.2002

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel late this afternoon ended their two-day working visit to Valga County.

In the morning, the Head of State visited one of the biggest employers in the rural municipality of Sangaste - limited company Sanwood producing from local raw material solid-wood furniture.

The slaughterhouse of Valga Lihatööstus, just recently completed, caught the President's attention due to its environmentally-friendly and forward-looking technological design.

Before noon, the Head of State got an overview of the activities of Valga's border guard region, police district, rescue service and detachment of the Defence League, visited the Border Guard Museum and an international border crossing point at Valga.

Mrs Ingrid Rüütel in the forenoon familiarized herself with the possibilities to cultivate native culture and to participate in further vocational training in the rural municipality of Karula. She called at an adult education institution at Lüllemäe and met with members of local women`s association and, thereafter, visited Valga's arts centre, museum and music school.

In the afternoon, President Rüütel discussed with local government leaders and county government officials of Valga County the possibilities to balance Estonia's regional development, to improve our demographic situation and to work out a forward-looking education strategy. The local leaders deemed it necessary that the duties of local governments be guaranteed by state funding. They underscored the need to continue the dialogue in society with largest possible proportion of the population participating in order to come to a new national pact.

President Rüütel expressed satisfaction with this optimism and exploring spirit he had experienced during his ending visit to the County of Valga.
