The President of the Republic met with the President of Ukraine16.09.2002
President Arnold Rüütel this morning in Salzburg met with the President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma. The Heads of State discussed several topical questions of foreign and domestic policy.
As noted by President Kuchma, the goals of Ukraine were to join NATO and the European Union. Estonia, in his estimation, had come already that far that it was in the position of sharing its experience with others, including Ukraine. President Rüütel assured that Estonia would do that with pleasure. As one of the relevant areas, the President put forward the information technology, which was of great interest also to the Ukrainian Head of State.
According to President Arnold Rüütel, the European Union`s candidate countries before their accession had to solve some remaining problems. President Kuchma acknowledged the joint activities of the Baltic States and Poland for the purpose of finding solutions to issues arisen in the field of agriculture.
The Heads of State shared the view that in the bilateral economic relations having made significant progress over the last years there could still be more variety. An extension of the trade relations in geographical terms also served the interests of both countries. In the Presidents` opinion, the forthcoming state visit of the Estonian Head of State to Ukraine definitely helped to reach this objective. According to President Leonid Kuchma, in Ukraine there was very much interest in the Estonian President's visit and in Estonia`s progress alike.
The Ukrainian Head of State expressed his satisfaction with the fact that the Ukrainians living in Estonia could feel at home there. According to President Rüütel, as great representatives of the Ukrainian people in Estonia they enriched our culture and economic life.
In Salzburg, the Heads of State of Estonia and Ukraine are participating in the European Summit of the World Economic Forum.
