The President of the Republic carries on his state visit to Hungary
12.09.2002

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel started the second day of their state visit to Hungary meeting with the Prime Minister Péter Medgyessy. At their talks, the preparations to enter the European Union and the possibilities to build closer economic relations between the two countries were dealt with.

In President Rüütel's opinion, the candidate countries of the European Union with their already rapidly growing economies and, hopefully, before long going to be integrated into the common market were in need of additional development incentives. One of those, according to him, could be an extension of logistically completed Via Baltica up to the Black Sea. Such an arterial road would link the Baltic Sea states to Middle Europe and the Black Sea states making things a lot easier for both manufacturers and service industries of these countries, including not only transit but also logistics and commerce, President Rüütel noted. Furthermore, this kind of connecting activities would also bring new tourists and investors to the countries concerned.

In the Hungarian Prime Minister's view, the idea was definitely worth putting into practice and so, he wanted to introduce it to his colleagues from neighbouring countries as well.

After meeting the Prime Minister of Hungary, the President of the Republic, Mrs Ingrid Rüütel and the official, business and press delegations accompanying them travelled to Eger by an Orient-Express museum train. During the train travel, the Estonian Head of State talked with officials from Hungary's ministries of agriculture, interior and environment the problems Hungary had in the fields of regional development, rural life and agriculture.

At Eger, the Estonian Head of State was welcomed by Mayor Imre Nagy and, thereafter, President Rüütel addressed the Town Council of Eger referring in his short speech to the points of contact between the Estonians and Hungarians proving that, apart from our Finno-Ugrian bonds, our peoples also are connected by history.

During a walk at Eger, they were guided through the historical town centre, called at a library and a wine cellar.

Tomorrow, the state visit will be continued at Kecskemét.
