Mrs Ingrid Rüütel spoke at the anniversary celebration of the Tartu Academy of Theology

Mrs Ingrid Rüütel today in the EELC's church of Mustvee, at an opening seminar dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Tartu Academy of Theology (TTA), held a lecture entitled "Traditional Culture and Identity in Postmodern Society". In her lecture Mrs Rüütel dealt with origin of culture and ethnos, birth of national identity, and also with the concept of indigenous culture. The lecture further contained an introduction to the history of folkloristic movement and a treatment of the role of folkloristic movement in the quest for identity.

In addition, Mrs Rüütel informed the participants in the seminar of an opinion poll carried out among the members of Estonian groups at the folklore festival "Baltica 2001", in the course of which over 200 people from different regions had answered the question: "Why is traditional music needed in our days?"

The seminar also included visits to some places connected with Old Believers' heritage in the vicinity of Mustvee: an Old Believers' church, the graveyard of Mustvee and the Old Believers' Monastery at Rajaküla.
