The President of the Republic is patron of students' history competition
04.09.2002

President Arnold Rüütel is the patron of students' historical research competition that in Estonia this year takes place for the fourth time. In the school year 2002-2003, the theme of the competition is the "Child".

While researching the subject, attention should be paid to the state and chances of children both in Estonia and elsewhere in the world; both at present and in the past. The following areas are expected to be dealt with: the child in Estonian society; the child and the world; the child and family; the child and health care; the child and education; the child and work; children with special needs; children's organisations; children's rights; the child and the war; the child in multicultural society etc.

The competition papers will be evaluated by a five-member commission considering if the research subject has been worded accurately and treated originally, and if one's own positions have been put forward. Relevant literature, press, photo and video materials, archive material, oral and written memoirs etc. may be used as sources.

So far, the competition has yielded nearly 300 research papers that are being kept at the office of the Estonian History Teachers's Association. Last year, 107 students sent their research papers to the competition. At the basic school level, two second prizes were awarded: to Kätlin Pahk from the Are Basic School and to Vivika Halapuu, Kadri Kann and Jane Peda from the Ülenurme Upper Secondary School. At the upper secondary school level, Indrek Must from the Hugo Treffner Upper Secondary School placed first.

Those interested are requested to enrol for the competition until December 20, 2002, at the address: Kaare 12, 65605 Võru, or at the e-mail address: tiiuojala@hot.ee , and the research papers are to be submitted not later than on March 31, 2003. The best participants will be honoured by the President of the Republic on May 3, 2003.

The competition will be carried out in two age groups: students of upper secondary and vocational schools and students of basic schools. The general instructions of the competition will be published in "Õpetajate Leht" and "Maaleht".
