The President of the Republic conferred with representatives of TALO
27.08.2002

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met leaders of the Estonian Employees' Unions' Confederation (TALO) Toivo Roosimaa and Peeter Ross. They talked both problems of unions belonging to TALO and topics connected with a new national pact.

The members of TALO are deeply concerned about the circumstance that the European way of administration and doing business has not put down roots in the Republic of Estonia to a degree needed. In domestic terms, abiding by agreements and control of those leave much to be desired. Since 80 % of TALO-members are university graduates, their low pay is the cause of continuous concern. At the same time, a shortage of professors, teachers and their recruits is becoming a serious problem too.

The representatives of TALO are supporting the idea of the President of the Republic to conclude a national pact on subjects requiring decisive solutions. To Estonia's intelligentsia, education, culture, science and health care are such problem areas which should be given priority. Estonia's economic life over the last decade has undergone a rapid development, yet now, it is high time to pay attention to improving the quality of Estonian people's education and strengthening the moral cohesion of our society. This, however, presupposes a significant enhancement of the role of culture and science while setting our national priorities. President Arnold Rüütel expects the membership of TALO to actively participate in formulating and putting into practice the principles of our national pact.
