The President of the Republic met with the Foreign Minister of Finland
27.08.2002

President Arnold Rüütel late this afternoon at Kadriorg met with Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja visiting Estonia due to a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Nordic Countries and the Baltic States.

At their meeting, the Estonian-Finnish bilateral relations and Estonia`s accession to the European Union and NATO were under discussion. President Rüütel rated the relations between Estonia and Finland very highly mentioning in this connection Finland as Estonia`s most important trading partner. Both the President and the Foreign Minister were confident that our political, economic and cultural relations were deepening still further, whereas both countries benefited from Estonia`s rapid development and growing competitiveness. The close economic integration in the Baltic Sea region also presupposes a more productive co-operation between the partners in the labour market. Finland having the chairmanship of the Council of the Baltic Sea States is intent on contributing to the advancement of this dialogue.

The Foreign Minister of Finland underscored that - considering the globalization and close integration - it was necessary to promote exchange of ideas on how to solve the problems connected with globalization. As a future member of the European Union and NATO, Estonia already has better chances than before to have a say also in these subjects.
