The President of the Republic started his visit to Hiiumaa

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel this morning started a county visit to Hiiumaa.

Aboard the ferry “Ofelia”, the County Governor of Hiiumaa, Hannes Maasel, briefed the President on the socio-economic situation in Hiiumaa. Members of the Board of the Producers` Association of Hiiumaa Üllar Pöial, Mati Nurs, Agu Kohari and Kalle Kruus, participating in the meeting informed the President about the development of economy and enterprise in Hiiumaa. During the meeting, inadequate shipping links between mainland and Hiiumaa, and the lack of qualified workforce were brought out as the major problems. They also discussed possibilities of launching a shipping line between Latvia, Estonian islands, Finland and Sweden, and of providing funding for it..

In the afternoon, in the hamlet of Lelu, the President called at the home of the master of wooden sculptures, Maire Põldma, where five children are being brought up.

Thereafter, the President in the municipality house of Emmaste met with the mayor of Emmaste who briefed him on the development of the municipality. The President also attended a public gathering at the lighthouse of Kõpu where the issue of founding at Kõpu a national park was raised. The President opined that the decision on this issue had to be made by the residents of the municipality of Kõrgessare themselves.

In the afternoon, the President is going to visit the farm of Veskimetsa. Mrs Ingrid Rüütel will take part in a roundtable on folk culture at the museum of Hiiumaa.
