The President of the Republic attended the celebrations of the Cross of Liberty Day
17.08.2002

President Arnold Rüütel today visited the farmstead of Admiral Johann Pitka at Ebavere where the nationwide Cross of Liberty Day was marked for the 23rd time. The Head of State in his speech emphasized that the creation of our independent state and the War of Independence needed to be treated in school classes. ''Those were times when the Estonian armed forces were created and our social mentality emerged, and thus, the basis for the perpetuity of the Estonian national spirit was formed,'' President Rüütel said.

The President wished the organizers of the celebrations strength and success. In the event, among others, veteran of the War of Independence August Pruuel took part. The Head of State planted an oak tree in the farmyard of Johann Pitka.

The President of the Republic also attended a reception on this occasion at the Museum of Väike-Maarja.
