The President of the Republic met with the Defence Minister of Turkey

President Arnold Rüütel late this afternoon at Paslepa met with the Defence Minister of Turkey, Sabahattin Çakmakoğlu. President Rüütel expressed his satisfaction with an outline agreement on defence co-operation today concluded between Estonia and Turkey which enables expanded co-operation in different areas of defence.

President Rüütel, recalling Turkish President Ahmet Nezdet Sezer's visit to Estonia in April, said that the Estonian-Turkish relationship was excellent.

At the meeting, also Estonia's accession to NATO was under discussion. According to President Rüütel, the productive co-operation with Turkey had helped Estonia to prepare for the NATO membership. Turkish Defence Minister Sabahattin Çakmakoğlu said that Turkey supported the admission to NATO not only of all the three Baltic states but also of the other aspirant countries. President Rüütel thanked Turkey for its support.
