The President of the Republic met with the Minister of Agriculture
14.08.2002

President Arnold Rüütel late this afternoon at Kadriorg met with the Minister of Agriculture, Jaanus Marrandi. The Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Toomas Kevvai, as well as the representatives of farmers' organisations: Kalev Kreegipuu, Toomas Paur, Kaur Nurm, Arno Sild, and Jaak Kõiv also took part in the meeting.

The focal points of the meeting were the negotiations on agriculture with the European Union and Estonia`s problems with milk production. The President and Minister Marrandi agreed that Europe`s rural development payments should be used to support life in those rural areas where the development of agricultural production is supplemented by creation of non-agricultural jobs. Estonia, in order to effectively use the European Union's payments, should be active in working out its rural development strategy. Minister Marrandi remarked that possibilities to support farmers' associations as their self-help organisations were to be weighed up.

Representatives of dairy farmers submitted their proposals to the President of the Republic and the Minister. The Minister assured that the quality of milk was a top priority in dairying and that the dairy farmers were to be treated flexibly. They noted jointly that both big and small farms had to find their niches in the market.
