The President of the Republic met local leaders
08.08.2002

President Arnold Rüütel today at Paslepa received the Governor of the Hiiu County, Hannes Maasel, discussing with him possibilities of how to promote local enterprise. According to Hannes Maasel, nearly 10 % of the working age population of the county worked outside Hiiumaa. One of the possible solutions of the problem was creation of new jobs, above all, in such traditional areas like farming and food production, but also setting up new small enterprises. According to Maasel, the local dairy industry was about to be put into operation again and production of food at farms was advancing too. Wider use of chances to develop tourism would help to create new jobs as well.

At the meeting, the programme of President Arnold Rüütel's and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel's forthcoming tour of Hiiumaa on August 21-22 also was talked about.

In the afternoon, the President discussed with Marko Pomerants, the Governor of the Lääne-Viru County, and Matti Jõe, the Mayor of Rakvere, how to promote regional development and how to incorporate local capacities into implementation of such projects which created additional prerequisites for development. They held that one of the key issues with it was training of good project managers. Through training, more educated people could be employed in rural areas. They agreed that an effective solution of this problem would create conditions for well-balanced development of all Estonia's regions.
