Two Presidents are touring Saaremaa

President Vaira Vike-Freiberga of Latvia accompanied by her husband Imants Freibergs, the President of the Republic of Estonia and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel today continued her visit to Saaremaa and Muhu

In the morning, they visited the St. Peter's and St. Paul's Church and the remnants of an ancient stronghold at Kaarma and, thereafter, saw the meteorite crater of Kaali. The Latvian President and her entourage took interest in a handicraft exibition, opened at the school of Kaali, where the local handicraft-masters gave President Vaire Vike-Freiberga as present a knitted woollen jacket. At the tavern of Kaali the guests admired ironwork furniture made by local smiths and tasted home-brewed beer.

In Muhu they visited the village museum of Koguva where they were welcomed by the manageress of the museum, Alviine Schmuul. Thereafter, the President of the Republic and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel hosted for the guests a dinner at the manor of Pädaste. In Muhu they also visited an ostrich farm at Nautse where Elmet and Helene Erik gave an overview of the activities of their farm.

In the afternoon, they visited a glass blowing workshop at Laugu where President Rüütel under guidance of artist Peeter Rudash also tried to blow glass. In the evening, the Presidents and their entourage attended the opening concert of the 7th Kuressaare Chamber Music Festival. Subsequently the Mayor of Kuressaare, Jaanus Tamkivi, held a reception in honour of the two Presidents.

The visit of the President of Latvia to Saaremaa will end tomorrow at noon.
