President of the Republic Hosted Head of the Government from Wallonia Region, Belgium
17.07.2002

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel received a delegation from Wallonia Region, Kingdom of Belgium, led by Prime Minister Jean-Claude Van Cauwenberghe and hosted lunch at Paslepa summer residence.

Guests were interested in Estonia's development during the last ten years as well as in the details of restoration of independence. President Rüütel was sincerely moved by greetings from Jean Bock who as the former president of the Consultative Council of the Benelux Countries had also strongly supported independence endeavours by the Baltic countries.

The discussion focused mainly on Estonia's preparations to accede the European Union and NATO and relations with Russia. Answering Jean-Claude Van Cauwenberghe's question about problematic areas in the accession agenda President Rüütel mentioned agriculture and oil shale energy.

The parties also talked about promoting the French language and culture in Estonia. The guests said that they were going to offer language instruction both the young, public officials as well as researchers in different fields.

''We will take home a long list of potential co-operation fields'', said guests.
