The President of the Republic met with an experienced German politician

President Arnold Rüütel this afternoon met with Otto Graf Lambsdorff, Chairman of the Board of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, Honorary Chairman of the Liberal International and former German Minister for Economic Affairs.

During their conversation, such subjects of common interest as the enlargement of the European Union and NATO, and the relations between Estonia and Germany were touched upon. The President, at the same time, thanked the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for their substancial contribution to the development of Estonian thoughts on society. Also the need, topical in both countries, to channel more investments into rural regions was under discussion.

At the meeting, they further discussed prospects and role of small peoples and countries in the future Europe. The guest agreed on President Rüütel's opinion that the more varied the world the richer was the mankind. "We see the European Union as a union of countries in which the identities of all peoples will endure," the President emphasized.

Otto Graf Lambsdorff praised the growing support among the population of Estonia to the accession to the European Union. In addition, the guest acknowledged Estonia's achievements in building its economy and integrating its ethnic minorities.
