The President of the Republic received the best university graduates
21.06.2002

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel today at the Kadriorg Baroque Palace received the best university and college graduates from across Estonia.

The President of the Republic in his speech to the fifty best graduates emphasized that survival of our state depended on joint efforts of the whole people. Speaking about a word of rather old-fashioned sound - "ideal"- which in Estonian has a nice-sounding equivalent "aade", the President urged the graduates: "I would like the young generation of Estonian intelligentsia to set their hearts on the revival of the Estonian ideals. Whom could we count on if not on you, for you are those going to shape the face of the Estonian society and state in the next decades."

The Minister of Education, Mailis Rand, addressing the best graduates stressed that the intellectuals also were obliged to take responsibility for the survival of our culture and native tongue. The Minister of Education presented all graduates participating in the reception with a memorial medal.

Andre Karpištšenko from the Tallinn Technical University replied with a speech on behalf of the graduates. According to him today`s graduates were children of changes grown up in the times of two different societies and thus needing to keep in mind that possibly none of their plans would come true, but for whom, on the other hand, everything was within their reach. "Estonian society needs just the likes of us and we are those capable of turning Estonia into a country which we can be proud of," Andre Karpištšenko assured.

At the reception, music was played by the folk ensemble "Sinimaniseele".
