The President of the Republic met with the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament
20.06.2002

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg discussed with the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Birgitta Dahl, the possibilities of co-operation and sustainable development in the Baltic Sea region.

At the meeting, both sides noted with satisfaction that the Baltic States were fully merged into the Baltic Sea regional co-operation. The Estonian Head of State indicated that the existing close contacts between the Baltic Assembly and the Nordic Council had expanded to encompass a variety of relations in the field of culture, economy, conservation etc., and voiced the hope that these two organisations amalgamated before too long. He expressed his conviction that the internal relations of the region would persist also after the Baltic States would have joined the European Union. The Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Birgitta Dahl, assessed the given region as having a great potential in an enlarged European Union. She added that, for Sweden, the enlargement of the European Union was one of its priorities.

Birgitta Dahl and Arnold Rüütel as leading politicians of their countries have met repeatedly already earlier. In the course of the today`s conversations, among other things also their contacts dating back to the time before the restoration of Estonia's independence were recalled. The guest took interest in President Rüütel's idea to combine cultivation of natural grasslands with production of organic food both on the Baltic Sea islands and coastal areas, and to support these activities by relevant measures of the European Union.
