The President of the Republic discussed usage of strategic resources
18.06.2002

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg discussed with the President of the Bank of Estonia, Vahur Kraft, the Manager of the Centre for Strategic Studies, Meelik Kattago, the Head of the Estonian Institute for Future Studies, Erik Terk, and the Leading Analyst of KPMG, Jüri Sakkeus, how to use Estonian strategic resources in the interest of sustainable development.

The participants of the meeting found in accord that one of Estonia's most important strategic resources was its geographic location; whereas the discussion focussed on Estonia`s potential - while developing and diversifying economic relations with the West and the East simultaneously - to act as a "window of the West to the East". Yet, in order to outbid our neighbouring economies in terms of competitiveness, both the state and the private sector should display more initiative and far-reaching visions than so far. The President underscored the need to pay more attention to the economic co-operation between the present applicant countries of the European Union, including development of transport corridors.

The aspects of our geographic location are also being dealt with in the project "Horizons of the Port of Tallinn", which today was presented to the Head of State. In the course of the discussion, the President noted that in order to better use the potential of Estonia as a maritime country besides the Port of Tallinn other ports and transport networks linking them were to be developed as well.

In addition, the guests informed the President of other directions in the work of the Centre for Strategic Studies saying that, in their view, it would serve the purpose if the President's Academic Council and the Centre for Strategic Studies in future worked together in certain areas, involving into debate about development projects the broader public too.
