The President of the Republic handed over an Order
03.06.2002

President Arnold Rüütel this evening at Kadriorg handed to Professor of Physiology Johannes Piiper the IV Class Order of the White Star. The internationally renowned scientist was decorated with this high state honour for his services to Estonia on the occasion of the Independence Day.

Addressing the honoree, the Head of State expressed his delight at having once again an opportunity to greet the outstanding scientist, who had brought Estonia to the world science. The President recalled his meetings with Johannes Piiper in times of restoring the independence of Estonia, when those meetings had given him peace of mind and determination to proceed in the direction chosen.

The Vice-President of the Estonian Academy of Science, Mihkel Veiderma, congratulated the most active foreign member of the academy and thanked him for helping Estonian young scientists in their studies and establishing contacts abroad.

Johannes Piiper was born 1924 in Tartu. In 1952, he graduated from the School of Medicine of the University Goettingen and, in 1954, obtained his doctor`s degree from the same university. He worked at the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine and, at present, is an Emeritus Professor. Professor Piiper is Honorary Doctor of the Tartu University and the University of Fribourg.
