The President of the Republic at the conference on the anniversary of the Estonian kroon
11.06.2002

The President of the Republic today in Tallinn attended the conference on the 10th anniversary of the reintroduction of the Estonian kroon and delivered a welcoming speech there.

According to the President, our own currency had been one of the symbols of the Estonia's restored independence. The IME-proposal of 1987 (on economic independence of Estonia) providing for its introduction had been the first economic basic document of Estonia striving for independence. "And although the world financial centres have warned us about all sorts of dangers and risks, the Estonian kroon has proven the ability of our people to cope with administration of our state," the Head of State said and linked his recollections of this time to the imminent abandonment of the kroon in favour of the euro, due to joining the European Union.

"I believe that, in the European-wide integration and in the process of globalization, the Estonians will be helped by our inherent pragmatism and adaptability trained over centuries. The same way like we - while introducing our kroon - attached importance beyond its historical and political aspects also to its economic advantages, can we, apart from the economic advantages of the euro, see its symbolic meaning," the President said.

The Head of State emphasized that money was just an instrument, but the guarantee of the survival of society were joint work, culture forming a homogeneous society, and politics orientated towards their stability. "In today's Estonia, we have to think in the first place of strengthening the foundations supposed to ensure well-balanced development of our society," the President noted.
