07.06.2002

As of today, President Arnold Rüütel is Honorary Doctor of the University of Helsinki.

At the conferral ceremony at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry of the University of Helsinki, taking place every sixth year, today the focus were eight honorary doctors: apart from Estonian President Dr Arnold Rüütel, Emeritus Professor Bernard Stanton from Cornell University, USA, Professor El-Houri Ahmed from the University of Khartoum, and others. In addition to the honorary doctors, the faculty awarded doctorates and masters degrees to those having earned them over the last six years, and remembered the so-called doctors of joy having received a doctorate 50 years ago.

The Estonian Head of State was presented at the ceremony as a long-time and prolific agricultural scientist who, owing to his knowledge and experience, can serve his nation as President in the best possible way. As a testimony to the dignity and sharp mind of the honorary doctors, the promoter handed top hats and swords over to them.

From the assembly hall of the university the procession of students, faculty and guests headed for the Cathedral of Helsinki where the four-hour conferral ceremony was followed by a divine service.

In the evening, a festive dinner will take place at National Opera, where, on behalf of the honorary doctors, Arnold Rüütel, President of the Republic of Estonia, will deliver a speech. The conferral ceremony, lasting for three days, tomorrow will be concluded by a ball at Students'House.
