The President of the Republic met with the President of Finland

President Arnold Rüütel late this afternoon in Helsinki met with the President of the Republic of Finland, Tarja Halonen.

At their cordial meeting, the Heads of State expressed their satisfaction with Estonia and Finland having close relations and backing each other. President Halonen assured that Finland was supporting Estonia's aspirations to join the European Union and would continue supporting Estonia also after accession. The Estonian Head of State commented on the course of our accession talks noting, among other things, that the agricultural quotas were alarmingly low.

The Finnish Head of State touched upon the substance of her recent meetings with the Presidents of the United States and Russia, at which, among other topics, also the enlargement of NATO and participation of the Baltic States in this process had been under discussion.

Tomorrow, the University of Helsinki will confer an Honorary Doctorate to President Arnold Rüütel. The Honorary Doctorate Conferral Ceremony will commence with a festive dinner and a sword-whetting event already tonight.

President Halonen congratulated President Rüütel noting that Honorary Doctor's top hat suited him superbly. The Estonian Head of State said that he felt honoured by the given decision since the University of Helsinki stood for high level of culture and education distinguishing Finland.

At the end of the meeting, President Rüütel invited the Finnish Head of State to share in Estonian summer events. President Halonen promised to take advantage of the invitation at the first best opportunity.
