The President of the Republic formed a roundtable

President Arnold Rüütel this evening at Kadriorg issued an executive order to set up a Roundtable of Local Government and Regional Development, which is going to be an advisory body to the President of the Republic.

The Head of State appointed representatives of the Association of Estonian Cities, the Association of Rural Local Governments, and the Local Government Associations Co-operation Assembly, as well as representatives of every county`s local government association and of the City of Tallinn members of the roundtable.

By the President's today's order also the roundtable's rules of procedure were endorsed. Pursuant to the rules the roundtable will act in close collaboration with the President's Academic Council, analysing and making proposals aimed at advancing local government as a manifestation of democratic organization of society and at balancing regional development. Furthermore, the purpose of the roundtable is to foster the co-operation between state and local governments for the sake of securing our statehood, developing democracy and supporting civil society.
